As a part of our Induction program, Dt: 19.08.2019 to 24.08.2019, 5 Days our Head of departments of various branches have took the morning sessions and explained about various trends of their departments.
Department of Civil Hod., Dr. MCS Madan explained about the latest trends in Civil Engineering
The recent trends can be divided into two domains: One that aligns with the traditional civil engineering and the second that comes from the interdisciplinary sciences. But the focus of both these domains remains the same – “Sustainable and Resilient Infrastructure” in a broad sense.
First domain: It is more than a decade and the focus still remains the same development (or improvement) of smart materials like fiber-reinforced concrete, use of different generations of waste or recycled materials like geopolymers, rubber pellets, GGBS, fly ash etc., in concrete. People have also started to think along energy-efficient buildings complementing the structural efficiency of the buildings. There are also nanotechnology materials, which are not only being used for enhancing material properties and functions but also in the context of energy conservation.
The other smart material, Shape Memory Alloys are being studied and deployed for enhancing structural control features. Shape memory alloys have high damping capacity, durability and fatigue resistance capacity. Still a lot is unknown about their advantages in various scenarios. They are widely used in aircraft, spacecraft and other automobile units.
Second – Making use of interdisciplinary knowledge: The use of Computer vision to understand structural health so as to improve the resiliency has got a huge response these days. People are using vision based techniques for corrosion detection, computer vision applications in oil explorations, computer vision to determine the progress of construction etc.
Also, sensing techniques have been on the roll as there has been decrease in their prices and the size continuously. Sensors are being used in pavements, bridges etc., to understand the crack propagation and also the structural vibration.
The other field which has got more importance because of these sensing techniques is the data-interpretation from these sensors. Various computational algorithms related to data-mining, optimization, machine learning have been under focus for quite a time now. These algorithms are not only restricted to sensors, but also in designing more robust transportation network, drainage systems and water channels network.
The applications of statistics in civil engineering is another widely popular area used in developing reliability models, hazard prediction models and quantifying uncertainties in complex civil infrastructure systems. The area is more inclined towards societal risk management. Insurance companies have started recruiting civil engineers with an expertise in this area.
The next area which I think would gain popularity in civil engineering is the virtual reality/augmented reality that would help to simplify the overall process of construction engineering. Also, use of robots in construction industry is other area. But I think it is hard to build robots at this time which would have as good or similar realizations as human does.
Department of EEE HOD, Prof. ANVJ Rajagopal explained about the latest trends in Electrical engineering
The field of Electrical engineering is very vast, especially these days and therefore cannot be summarized in a few sentences or points. Depending on the final field of specialization, one would need to equip him/herself with loads of specific theoretical as well as practical information as well as get familiarized with the latest trends and developments around the world, related to the particular field of specialization.
As far as I can tell, a great effort has been done by innovative scientists in this research area. A couple of years ago, a research team in MIT succeeded to wirelessly transfer power 60 watts for 2 meters with an efficiency of 40%.
Now, the transfer range and the efficiency levels are increasing on a startling pace, and hopefully soon (WPT) would be adapted in most of our home applications such as charging Laptop & smart phones. Moreover, scientists have achieved new technologies and techniques for transmitting power wirelessly from a stationary source to a mobile receiver.

Mechanical engineering is a very broad field. There are hundreds of recent trends, such as:
- manufacturing by 3D printing
- new plastics and composite materials
- new metal alloys and metal composites
- machine learning and AI
- computer generated design
- Industry 4.0
- Internet Of Things in HVAC, autos, consumer products, manufacturing and more
- sources of renewable energy
- CO2 reduction from fossil fuels
- new internal combustion enginetechnology

Here are some of the top electronics trends
- Artificial Intelligence
AI has the potential to oversee the technological advancement in the future. Companies such as Google and Amazon have already started implementing AI and their AI-based products are embraced by an increasing number of people. AI is likely to replace a large amount of manual processes in the mere future.
- Rise of Level-3 autonomous vehicles
This year will even see the launch of Level-3 autonomous vehicle which will be able to fully take over the driver with precise autonomous technology. The Level-3 autonomous vehicles might even shape a new future for the autonomous driving industry.
- Drone deliveries
E-commerce giants such as Amazon are expected to launch its first drone deliveries in the UK. Walmart is also expected to deploy drone deliveries in the United States next year.
- Internet of Everything
This year might see everything becoming connected as the Internet of Everything will continue to rise in both consumer and B2B market. Apple will be releasing the Home app this fall which is expected to give a major boost to connected technology. The app will allow the users to control electronics, climate, security, and lights via Apple devices.
- 3D printing
3D printing has the potential to bring more efficiency and sustainability in the manufacturing industry. 3D printing can improve major industries such as construction and healthcare for the better.
According to PwC, manufacturers of different industries have already started integrating 3D printed parts and products which are quickly becoming end products. It is likely that more companies will implement 3D printing as adopting the technology becomes easier and cost-effective.
- Virtual Reality
Companies such as Google, Facebook, Apple, and Samsung have made significant leaps in the Virtual Reality. The technology can also be considered as the new content delivery system as businesses can conduct conferences and face-to-face meetings from different parts of the world.
Department of ECE HOD, B.V. Ram kumar explained about the latest trends in Computer Science and engineering
The most advance trends in computer science is Machine learning, cloud computing and Artificial Intelligence. There are so many multi-disciplinary courses emerge as bioinformatics, biomedical computing and data analytics, obviously statistics and theoretical computer science play a big role in it.
